For Professionals

A specially designed hoist may be required to transfer a disabled person from a chair into a bath or onto a toilet. Choosing the correct system to suit both the patient and carer is essential.
Several hoist designs and systems are available.

Ceiling hoists
These may be fixed-position or adjustable. Overhead ceiling hoists use no floor space and eliminate the need for storage. Ceiling fixed hoists are easier to use than floor fixed hoists which may be difficult to manoeuvre on carpeting.

Floor hoists
Floor lift hoists have been designed for use in both the domestic environment and in care homes. Electric and hydraulic units are available. Floor hoists can be less expensive than ceiling hoists and are good for use in common care areas.

Wall hoist
A wall hoist is inexpensive, versatile and easy to install. The lift can be made portable with the use of additional wall brackets and is particularly useful in bathrooms where space can be at a premium.

Dedicated Bath lifts and seats
For users who don't require assistance once they are in the bath, a fixed height bath with a bath lift or seat may be a practical solution. The seat may be an integral part of the bath, where the seat is also water powered, or it may be a separate unit which simply rests in the bottom of the bath. (The bath should be of such a construction to take the extra weight). Bath lifts that sit in the bath are convenient in that they can be completely removed when not required.
